What's Happening in Boston this February?


We get it. We’re smack-dab in the middle of winter. And while the weather hasn’t been bad lately, it’s still a time of year when the coziness of your home can seem more inviting than a day or evening out. Still, from Valentine’s Day happenings to yes, even an undie run, there are plenty of activities to get pumped for this February. Read on for 29 reasons to brave the chill.


Saturday, Feb. 1 12th Annual “Some Like it Hot” Chili Cook-Off. You’re a few chili samples and a vote away from helping one Cambridge restaurant win the Harvard Square Chili Pot. (1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.; in front of Bluestone Lane, Cambridge; free; all ages)


Sunday, Feb. 2 Chinatown Lion Dance Parade. Ring in the year of the rat with performances by 10 local organizations, plus a Culture Village with arts and crafts, Chinese calligraphy, and music. Monday, Feb. 3 Christopher Columbus Park Tunnel of Love. Find a moment to lead your special someone through the park’s trellis, which has been transformed with lights and music into the perfect spot for a romantic rendezvous. Tuesday, Feb. 4 Rest & RestoreYou’ll come away from a panel of fitness, medical, and wellness professionals with more insight about how to curb anxiety, relieve pain, and slow down. (6 p.m. – 8 p.m.; The Lenox Hotel, Boston; $5; 21+)


Wednesday, Feb. 5 The World of “Little Women” at the Gibson House. See portions of this home museum not usually on view, and score some behind-the-scenes details about scenes shot inside for Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women” adaptation. Friday, Feb. 7 Hasty Pudding Man of the Year. This Harvard institution may not have announced its 2020 Man of the Year yet, but with a past of list honorees that includes Ryan Reynolds, Paul Rudd, and Justin Timberlake, you’re not likely to be disappointed. Saturday, Feb. 8 Cupid’s Undie RunDon your best underthings for a lap around Fenway Park in support of a cure for neurofibromatosis. (Noon – 4 p.m.; Fenway Park, Boston; $40; 21+)


Sunday, Feb. 9 Academy Awards Red Carpet Gala. Proceeds from this soiree –which includes a cocktail reception, chef stations, a silent auction, and more — go toward the Ellie Fund’s mission to support services for breast cancer patients.  (5:30 p.m.; Fairmont Copley Plaza, Boston; $300; all ages)

Monday, Feb. 10 Boston SciFi Film FestivalAttend every day of this event, or pop in at the end to participate in “The ‘Thon,” a 24-hour test of movie-watching endurance. (Friday, Feb. 7 – Monday, Feb. 17 at various times; various locations, Boston and Somerville; $15 – $175; all ages)

Friday, Feb. 14 Mortified. There are plenty of lovey-dovey activities to keep you busy on Valentine’s Day, but this show gives you the alternative option to listen to others share the diary entries, poems, and home movies of their teen years. Saturday, Feb. 15 Bugs Bunny Film Festival. Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Tweety Bird, and the rest of the Looney Tunes gang will return to The Brattle Theatre for the 25th iteration of this festival. Sunday, Feb. 16 Monster JamWorcester’s DCU Center will serve as the home of “Grave Digger,” “Raminator,” and more monster trucks for a weekend of engine-powered competition. (Friday, Feb. 14 – Sunday, Feb. 16; DCU Center, Worcester; tickets start at $15; all ages)


Monday, Feb. 17 “Nina Simore: Four Women.” Based on the song “Four Women,” this production showcases four divergent African American perspectives, including Simone’s. (Wednesday, Feb. 12 – Sunday, March 8 at various times; Merrimack Repertory Theatre, Lowell; $24 – $46; recommended for ages 14+)


Tuesday, Feb. 18 “Plaza Suite.” For the first time in 20 years, Hollywood couple Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker will take the stage together for a pre-Broadway run of this Neil Simon comedy. Wednesday, Feb. 19 Beach Party with REI. Complete with snow yoga and a snow sculpture contest, this event will have you wondering why “fun in the sun” is a phrase often reserved for summer. (Noon – 8 p.m.; The Rink at 401 Park, Boston; free, $6 – $10 to skate; all ages)

Wednesday, Feb. 26 “Fiddler on the Roof.”  This musical-theater staple makes its national tour stop for a little more than two weeks at the Emerson Colonial Theatre. (Tuesday, Feb. 25 – Sunday, March 8 at various times; Emerson Colonial Theatre, Boston; $44.50 – $204.50; recommended for ages 8+)


Thursday, Feb. 27 Synesthesia Suite. Composer Mary Bichner’s synesthesia allows here to “hear” color and “see” sound. Thanks to Museum of Science planetarium visuals, this show allows audience members to get a glimpse of the experience. Friday, Feb. 28 National Golf ExpoIn addition to exhibits, seminars, and interactive features, this show features the largest driving range and demonstration stage in the Northeast. Saturday, Feb. 29 South Asian Showdown. Expect the energy to be high as Bollywood Fusion dance teams from all over North America congregate to compete on Leap Day. (6 p.m.; John Hancock Hall, Boston; $25 – $100; all ages)
