"Remember the Titans" will kick off a month of free movies and concerts at the Museum of Fine Arts in September.
Before it reopens its doors on a date to be determined in early fall, the Museum of Fine Arts will welcome back visitors for some free outdoor activities in September.
The MFA will host a pair of movie screenings and musical performances on Thursday evenings throughout September, beginning with a 20th anniversary screening of the 2000 sports drama “Remember the Titans” on Sept. 3 in the museum’s Fenway parking lot, which will be co-hosted by the Roxbury International Film Festival. (RIFF, which is traditionally held at the MFA in the fall, will be held virtually this year, from Sept. 30 to Oct. 5.)
The museum will also show a screening of Jennifer Lopez’s 1997 historical drama “Selena” on Thursday, Sept. 17, co-hosted by RIFF and the Boston Latino International Film Festival.
The museum will also host a pair of concerts featuring local talent, with singer-songwriter Anjimile and poet/rapper Oompa performing on September 11 and R&B singer-songwriter Miranda Rae and indie/Americana singer-songwriter Naomi Westwater on September 25. The shows will be streamed from the museum’s Calderwood Courtyard on the MFA website and its Facebook and YouTube pages.
Tickets for all four performances will be made available for free on MFA’s website on the Monday prior to the performance at 10 a.m., with a limit of two tickets per order.
“We’re excited to offer our spaces — both on the MFA’s campus and on our digital platforms — for Bostonians to enjoy the art of film and music together,” said Makeeba McCreary, the museum’s chief of learning and community engagement. “We’re proud to continue our partnerships with the Roxbury International Film Festival and Boston Latino International Film Festival and to support local musicians at a time when there are so few opportunities to enjoy live performances.”
The MFA has yet to finalize a reopening date for its exhibit halls, but expects to welcome members and the general public sometime in the early fall. The museum will announce opening dates for upcoming exhibitions “Writing the Future: Basquiat and the Hip-Hop Generation” and “Monet and Boston: Lasting Impression” after it reopens.
